Chasing others...

The last city I visited was Tangiers in the North of Morocco. Mediterranean in feel and look, the sky was always blue and a salty sea air penetrated everything.

This was a city where many famous people had come and visited and stayed before they were ever famous. I could see why. It was inspirational. Long streets of whitewashed walls and art deco buildings guided my walking everyday. It has been a long time since I was able to just get up everyday and walk and say to myself "This makes me happy." I had that feeling in Tangiers.
My favourite place was a cafe and cinema called 'the ROXY'. The look of this place was mythic and I had to spend part of my day there drinking coffee and going to the cinema. The cinema was old style with a balcony and chandelier. I watched Superman Returns in French and just enjoyed the seediness of it. The great thing was the movie was played over and over, continuously all day so you could buy a ticket and just stay as long as you wanted. Though I wasn't certain, I think I saw people who had been asleep all day to the side of the audience and still others who were huddled in back rows in illicit embraces.

Famous writers like Alan Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac allegedly travelled here and stayed for periods of time so that they could write. I stayed in (what was purported to be) the same hotel where these same men lodged, the Hotel El-Muniria.
